The Synod states that it honors the Archbishop and his labors as the primate of the Church of Crete. However, the facts of the health have left them no choice.

Heraklion, Crete, Greece, October 19, 2021

The Eparchial Synod of the Church of Crete (Patriarchate of Constantinople) has begun the process that could lead to the replacement of Archbishop Irineos, 88, whose health is failing.

The Archbishop has been facing serious health problems in recent years and months. He had to be treated for acute respiratory failure for nearly two months last fall.

Given the situation, the Synod met yesterday and decided to appoint three physicians to examine Abp. Irineos and make recommendations on what further course of action to take. According to the statutes of the Church of Crete, the hierarchs could begin the process for replacing him, reports Vima Orthodoxias.

The Synod states that it honors the Archbishop and his labors as the primate of the Church of Crete. However, the facts of the health have left them no choice.

The Synodal decision has the blessing of Patriarch Bartholomew.
